The Wakeup Show 6 to 9 AM Weekdays
On Monday, December 7th, NewsTalk AM 1270 - WYXC experienced a catastrophic equipment failure knocking the station off the air. We have spent the last two days evaluating the situation to determine the expense and length of time required for WYXC to become operational again.
Radio and media in general are under enormous pressure as technology revolutionizes the way we receive news and entertainment. Many people now bypass radio to listen to music commercial free on satellite radio, IPods, and cell phones. As a result many FM stations across the nation are now dropping music formats to become news/talk stations.
As talk programming transitions to FM, this is increasingly leaving AM stations with very limited programming choices. AM radio is an inferior technology with poor audio quality that is subject to interference and poor nighttime reception. Many radio industry analysts believe AM radio may cease to exist within 5 to 7 years and that the AM radio band may be reallocated for other uses.
Clarion Communications, Inc. has operated WYXC for the past five years as a public service for the citizens of Bartow County. The owners have taken no salary or compensation during this time, and have instead used revenues to improve and operate the station.
In light of these radio industry changes and the impact we've experienced from the severe economic downturn, we cannot justify the expense in equipment and labor to put WYXC back on the air at this time.
The station has received hundreds of calls and e-mails this week and we want to thank all of the thousands of loyal listeners for their support and friendship over these past five years. We hope we've produced some great radio memories and brought enjoyment into your lives.
Also we give a special thanks to our advertisers, employees and especially to David Paul, host of our Wakeup Show. Dave is a highly gifted and unique radio personality with a very devoted local fan base.
We are in discussions now with others, including the previous owner, who may be interested in placing WYXC back on the air. We'll post any updates on the station's status on our Facebook fan page. # # #
