Backroom Report For Monday - November 23, 2009
UGA head coach Mark Richt has an excellent reputation... by all accounts he's a godly man who has the respect of the Bulldog nation. I've seen nothing during his nine years at the helm of the Dawgs that would indicate otherwise.
The loss to Kentucky Saturday night put an exclamation point on what has been a bad year, and Georgia Tech is favored to hand Richt another loss this weekend as they close out the regular season. A Yellow Jacket victory would put the Bulldogs record at 6 & 6 for the year... technically making Georgia bowl eligible, though one of those wins came at lowly Tennessee Tech... not even a Division I school.
One constant sore point during Richt's tenure at UGA has been a lack of disciple among the players... from arrests off the field to excessive penalties during games, Richt just hasn't used a firm enough hand with his players.
The time for Richt to make a statement has come, and there would be no better way than to gather his team together next Sunday morning and tell them that even though the Bulldogs are bowl eligible, they aren't deserving of a bowl appearance this year. Richt should then turn down any bowl bid they receive... it's the only honorable thing to do.
Will Richt do it? Very doubtful, as bowl season has become nothing more than a money grab for the universities and a reason to party for the fans. Far too many bowl games are played and too many teams with lousy records receive invitations.
Richt could cement his reputation as an honorable man by doing the honorable thing... and he might just start the ball rolling on a needed overhaul of the college football bowl system.

Though I played sports growing up, sports commentary isn't my thing... however, there's an issue at play involving college football and specifically University of Georgia football that merits exploration.
