Backroom Report For Monday - November 2, 2009
Pine Log is nowhere near Atlanta, but somehow my telephone number has been included in a database of Republican leaning voters likely to vote tomorrow in the Atlanta mayoral election.
Despite all of the pressing issues facing our capital city... this race has turned into nothing but a referendum on... well, race. For over three decades, each of the people to hold the office of Atlanta mayor has been black, and there are some... including the Georgia Democratic Party, who will say and do anything to stop Mary Norwood, a white candidate, from winning. Norwood is far ahead in the polls over the three blacks seeking the office and could possibly win without a runoff.
The Atlanta mayoral election in non-partisan and Mary Norwood is no Republican. Heck she even supported Obama last year. The Democrat Party has no business even being involved in the election, but they are so desperate to keep the mayor's office decidedly in loyal Democrat black hands that they are using radio, television, direct mail and robocalls directed to black registered voters to accuse Norwood of being a Republican. Heck they even try to imply she's in the same camp with Rush Limbaugh.
This is gutter politics at its worst, but unfortunately it does get worse... and that brings us back to the phone call I received. Someone... either the Georgia Democrat Party, someone allied with them, or a person in the camp of one of the black candidates was behind this call that went out to possible GOP voters. Listen as they do a 180 and now accuse Norwood of being a liberal Obama loving non-Republican. (audio here)
After a lifetime of being a staunch Republican, I backed off from involvement in party politics a few years ago when supposedly conservative Republicans in Congress abandoned our core principals and put party ahead of politics by supporting George W. Bush's bloated budgets while giving him a pass on enforcing our borders against the hordes of illegals who have infiltrated our nation. We now see Democrats in Congress doing the same dance with Obama.
It's time for politicians of all stripes to get back to the job of being servants of the people... it's time to be statesmen... time to stand up for ideology over party... and that means it's time for us to hold them accountable. I hope the voters of Atlanta see through all of the shenanigans being played strongly reject the politics of race and party.
That's my opinion, we welcome yours. Thanks for listening and I'll see you next Monday. I received an automated political telephone call yesterday that really demonstrates why so many people are completely turned off by elections and are upset with both major political parties.
Tell the black Democrats she's a Republican to get them fired up to come out and stop her. Then tell the white Republicans that she's a leftist Democrat so the GOP voters will just stay home. To heck with the issues... it all comes down to race and party and we're all the worse off for it.
