One of my pet peeves is littering... it ruins the beauty of Cartersville and Bartow County. People who are so lazy as to throw cans, bottles, food wrappers and cigarette butts out of their car window instead of putting the stuff in the trash should be fined to the max every time they're caught.

But there's a different type of litterbug who's handiwork is just as unsightly and is also illegal... that's the folks who feel they're above the law and go nail signs on utility poles or stick then in up public right of ways.

Two of the worst offenders are the "We Buy Ugly Houses" folks, and the scam insurance people advertising rip off health insurance. Seriously... would you buy insurance from someone whose marketing campaign consists of tacking an 800 number on a tree?

Saturday morning I was driving around Market Place Boulevard in front of Wal-Mart and discovered someone had illegally placed signs every few feet plugging the web site YourGreatSexLife.com

While stuck at the traffic light I was thinking... the ugly houses and insurance signs are bad enough, now someone is plugging a sexual enhancement or porn web site. Well the guy in the four-wheel drive truck in front of me had the same idea... when the light turned green he drove up on the shoulder of the road and proceeded to plow under every sign in the right of way for the next hundred yards.

I stopped by my office for a few minutes and decided to pull up the YourGreatSexLife.com web site to see just what kind of sleaze was being promoted in our fair community... imagine my surprise when I discovered it was a local church.

Now I understand that it's really tough these days for churches to get the attention of the under 40 crowd. And if using salacious deceptive advertising to make inroads into that group works... then power to you. Although somehow I doubt that Jesus would have stood up in the temple and given the congregation a talk about their sex lives.

No my problem with this church is not the message, that's their call. No my problem is that this local church decided it was OK to break the law and clutter up our roadways with their signs... and I believe Pastor Michael Lewkaszewski of Oak Leaf Church owes the community a public apology... and I hope by the end of today his church has removed all of their illegally placed signs.

In closing I do have one question though... these signs have been up for at least 2 or 3 weeks, so why haven't code enforcement officers from the City of Cartersville or Bartow County pulled the signs and taken action against Oak Leaf... or at the very least contacted Pastor Lewkaszewski and given him an opportunity to clean up his mess?
