Backroom Report For Monday - September 21, 2009
In politics there's an old rule that a charge unanswered soon becomes true. In other words, if someone accuses you of something or says something untrue about you, you should publicly deny the charge or offer a clear explanation that clears your name or soon people will start to believe the other guy.
There's also a flip side to that rule... once you've adequately defended yourself or clearly explained your position, you need to let the issue rest. Otherwise, people will begin to think you may actually be guilty of the charge or are not telling the whole truth, because you seem too eager to keep talking about it.
To steal the Shakespeare phrase for today, I would say, "The President doth protest too much me thinks."
Obama's healthcare proposal has taken a major hit among the American people. From the town hall forums held across the nation during the summer, to the enormous march on Washington on September 12th, ObamaCare is tanking in the polls with a majority now against it.
Now there's nothing wrong with a president defending his ideas, but from the minute Obama finished his speech to Congress two weeks ago he has been on a non-stop tour promoting his plan... and stretching the truth about his plan as he goes.
Then he capped off his endeavors with appearances on five... count'em... five Sunday news shows yesterday, and is also scheduled to be on Letterman tonight. There is a thing called media overexposure, and Obama is a little camera burned.
The office of president carries much power and once he fired his big gun with his nationwide speech, he should have taken a more low key approach and let members of his administration carry the healthcare debate water for a while. That way Obama could hold some political capital in reserve to use when it comes down to crunch time in the legislative process.
Now the emperor has no clothes and he has oversaturated the nation's airwaves and Americans are tuning him out and are going out of their way to avoid seeing, hearing or reading about him. Obama should remember, the more you try to talk your out of or into something... the less people believe you.

There's a quote from Shakespeare where Hamlet's mother Gertrude says, "The lady doth protest too much, me thinks."
That's my opinion, we welcome yours. Thanks for listening and I'll see you next Monday. For a complete transcript of this morning's comments or to replay the audio, go to NewsTalk1270.com
