Backroom Report for Monday, July 13, 2009
Later that afternoon I was headed north on Joe Frank Harris Parkway near Felton Road and I noticed a car coming up in my rear view mirror... a teenage girl was weaving back and forth across the lanes... speeding up... then slowing down... then jerking the car back into her lane, over and over. At first thought I assumed she was drunk, but when we pulled side by side at the next traffic light, there she was frantically tapping out text messages on her phone one after another.
These same scenarios play out constantly all day every day across this nation with destroyed property and lost lives being the tragic result. A recently released study showed that talking or texting while driving caused a driver to be more impaired than if he or she was well over the legal alcohol limit.
The Libertarian in me hates to see more and more laws being piled upon us, but in regards to people using cells phones, PDA's and other devices while driving... it has to be banned. For some reason I just don't feel like losing my life because someone can't wait until they get home or to the office before engaging in mindless conversation. If it's that important, pull into the nearest parking lot and talk your heart out.
We all know who you are... you're the person who doesn't move when the light turns green... you're the person driving 20 mph slower than the other traffic... you're the person we blow the horn at when you're sitting there talking instead of pulling out into traffic... you're the person whose car weaves back and forth... you're the person who's a danger to both yourself and the rest of the motorists you share the road with.
Now you may think you're the one person in the world who can talk and text while driving with no problems... don't kid yourself. That person doesn't exist.
That's my opinion, we welcome yours... Thanks for listening and I'll see you next Monday... for a complete transcript of this morning's comments, go to NewsTalk1270.com (End of complete transcript of commentary that aired on NewsTalk AM 1270 - WYXC at 7:35 AM Monday, July 13, 2009)
Thursday I was driving on a narrow, winding road near White and here she came... a middle aged woman straddling the center line with her car as we approached a curve from opposite directions. There was nowhere for me to go so I hammered down on the horn and thankfully she reacted at the last second and whipped back into her lane... probably saving us both a trip to the emergency room at the very least. The culprit? You guess it, she was so wrapped up in her cell phone conversation she didn't have a clue.
